Who Refers a Child to the SLP?
Students are most commonly referred for speech and language screenings and assessments by classroom
teachers because of concerns about speaking or comprehension skills. Parents and pediatricians also
make referrals. Some students are identified for referral through the kindergarten screening conducted each
June.
What happens after the referral is made?
After signed parental consent is received, the assessment can be conducted. The length and type of testing
used will vary according to the needs of each individual student in order to determine whether or not speech
services are necessary.
When the assessment is completed, the results are discussed with parents and teachers. If the student is
eligible to receive speech services, the therapy goals are established and therapy will begin. Frequency
of service is dependent upon the needs of the individual student.
